Yun Hi Chala Chal Rahi...

There is one thing that us, the urban lot, don’t do enough and need to do a lot more. And that is walking. I understand that walking can be a boring activity especially when you do it alone on a treadmill in a gym. But yes, there is scope for improvement. And it’s huge. All you need to do is to simply call your friends up, pack your bags, take a bus and flock to the Himalayas. Believe me, there are plenty of exciting walks waiting for you there. And if you choose a place like the Churah Valley in Himachal Pradesh, the walks are certainly going to be memorable as well.

As you might have already understood from other posts on this blog that I am talking about the same walk that 29-odd students from IIM Ahmedabad undertook as a part of the Shodh Yatra course this September. And what a walk it was. Churah Valley, which is tucked away in the remote northernmost corner of the state, lies on the road less traveled and is characterized by tranquillity that stems from minimal human intervention.

I aim to present in front of you a slice of this tranquility and I am confident that should you ever choose to undertake this walk it'll be worth remembering.

A walk in the night at Tissa might give you an opportunity to witness this spectacle. I doubt that you would have seen a better 'moonrise' before. We were lucky to witness this on the first night itself.

If you know the right people, you may also get a chance to visit this meadow. I think you would agree if I say that SRK must shoot a scene at this place in his next romantic blockbuster.

It would be unfair if I didn’t show you the difficult terrain that you would have to cover to reach these places. But believe me, you’ll get used to it and it’ll be surely worth it.

If you ever feel the need to take a shower, don't worry as there are plenty of these.

And now comes the most iconic picture (at least for me).

I can understand if you don’t get it at the first go. This is the meeting or sangam of two distinct streams.

This is the stream on the left that carries the muddy-water.

And this is the smaller stream on the right that brings with itself clear water.

It was a bonus to see this group of mountain goats grazing near the same bank.

Here are some other scenic beauties that we encountered on our way.

I hope that you enjoyed the pics and that these might be enough to motivate you to get out of your beds and start packing.

Believe me, the more you walk in these mountains, the more you discover and the more enjoyable becomes the journey.

P.S. I would like to thank NotOnMap (https://www.notonmap.com/) for taking care of the organizational aspects. Kudos to them!

Bairagarh and Shiv Temple

Bairagarh is a village on the road that connects Chamba to Killar. It is quite small, and not a very touristic place. But this will allow you to experience the local food at its finest. The food bought at the local eateries that you will encounter on the road was delicious: we had exquisite parathas and chai for breakfast and ate bananas bought from the local fruit shop. Continuing uphill on the road, you will encounter beautiful Shiv Temple, that is also a good viewpoint to see the valley.    Next to the Temple is a building in ruins that is accessible from a staircase and can be explored to get an even better view of the valley. You can find the exact location of the village on Google Maps   by clicking on the link.

Shodh Yatra - A journey to the unknown yet most beautiful places in Himachal Pradesh

A group of 28 IIM Ahmedabad students set out on a journey of self-realization and social awakening. We call this course “Shodh Yatra”. We went on a trek to the beautiful mountains of the Churah valley in Himachal Pradesh. Well that’s an irony!! Mountains of the valley. Our journey was - Full of unexpected experiences and events. But amidst all of that we got a taste of the vastness of nature, the beauty that resides in the landscape of our country and the tremendous love and care that people from the region had in stock for us. We reached Pathankot on the first day and took a mini bus to Bhanjraru, our base station. The next morning, we started our picturesque journey towards Devikothi, which is called the Jewel of the Churah valley. The day we started the journey, we had no idea what the next few days had in store for us and nor did I know that I would not forget this day all my life because of what was going to happen.    All set to conquer the mountains Headi...

Devikothi : A typical village of the Churah valley

Devikothi Village The Shodh Yatra led us in the beautiful village of Devikothi, one very isolated hamlet of the Chirah Valley about 110km from the district headquarters of Chamba in Himanchal Pradesh.   This village was typical of the ones we went through during our visit of Himanchal. Perched on the flank of the mountain, nestled in a forest of tall resinous trees, it is a charming intertwining maze of little alleys and flights of stairs. We crossed paths with very welcoming and friendly villagers, but also with flocks of sheep and the occasional cows and mule. The narrow paths through which this vivid crowd flows are flanked with charming houses painted in pastel colors. Some majestic  wooden  buildings look down into the deep valley of shining green. At the bottom of the village, in front of a square sits the temple of Chamunda dedicated to Devi with its rich depictions of animals and the exploits of the goddess Durga. The wooden carvings an...
